Initially just a crazy idea thrown in from the Finance Manager, we (or the ‘SU Wobblers’ as we are now known) suddenly found ourselves right in the middle of a real game down at the Arena late yesterday evening.

Paperwork being filled in (Jade taking control) and Euan running onto the court, it was time to practise! I may be biased when I say we didn’t look too rusty, and although Jade was getting hit left, right and centre, more baskets were being scored as the competitive side came out in everyone (even Tim). With our wheelchair basketball tops on, we definitely looked the part (after a hard day’s work as well, I might add). One of the opposition teams even said they thought we were professionals.

TIME FOR OUR FIRST GAME!

After a great start, with a 6-3 win, our hopes were set on gold. We then began to falter slightly, however, losing the next two games and eventually finishing third in our group and 5th overall. We put up a good fight, though! Not bad for our first attempt. Despite the loss we had an amazing night with even more amazing people and with a little practise before next year, we’ll undoubtedly be in medal contention.

So, next up for us is rounders in a few weeks and following on from that, mixed netball in October. Go #TeamWorc

Over the past few weeks it has been an amazing yet daunting experience settling into the role as a full-time officer.

Taking you back to the last day of our induction we were thrown into the ‘Day in a Life of an Officer’. This day basically put us to the test with scenarios and tasks that we would face in everyday life as an Officer. There was a whole range of tasks throughout the day from enquiries about welcome week to angry students, it was a great experience whilst being a little bit scary!

Since then, Euan and I have worked at our first Open day and what an exciting day that was! It was amazing to get to meet so many wonderful and aspiring students, I hope to see as many as you as possible in September!

Finally, I have been on a few conferences this week. The first being an Introduction to BUCS, this was a great insight to the BUCS conference and getting to understand exactly how it works. Followed by a two day conference at the NEC for NUS SU17, this consisted of a variety of workshops and keynote speakers topped off with the most wonderful 3 course meal (not bad). I am due to go on a few more conferences within the next few week and I am excited to keep learning as much as possible before meeting everyone in the next few months.

<a10:updated>2017-07-07T15:44:22+01:00</a10:updated>

My first week at the SU

Hi everyone,

My name is Sophie Glenny and I am pleased to be your Vice President Student Activities. I am from Manchester and came to Worcester to study B.Sc. Sports Coaching Science in Disability Sport. I have always been involved in the Students’ Union over the past three years of my degree by taking an active part in the Ladies’ Football Committee. Over the years I took on two roles within the Committee; in my second year I was one of four social secretaries, and in my final year I was fortunate enough to be the captain of the performance team. This gave me two different insights and roles within the club and the Students’ Union.

I ran for office because I have a great interest in the future of sports, societies and fundraising at Worcester. The experience that I have both received and witnessed from the Students’ Union over the three years has differed and varied which enabled me to form my own plans of what I think will benefit Worcester students.

My aims for the following year are:

Maintain a good relationship between the Students’ Union and the University and encourage the acknowledgment and promotion of sports and societies successes around the University.

Help broaden the promotion of societies to encourage more participants and attendance at their incredible events.

Encourage more intermural games within sports to help raise for charity/fundraise and develop partnerships and relationships between teams.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to be in this role and I cannot wait to meet so many new people whilst continuing to grow and support the current students at Worcester.
